MORDEN, MB – MP Candice Hoeppner has been taking an active role in promoting the importance of literacy during I Love to Read month, visiting schools throughout her riding of Portage—Lisgar.
“I Love to Read month is the perfect time to talk to children about the value of reading,” said MP Hoeppner. “It’s been my pleasure to visit school classrooms, reading to students and discussing with them the importance of reading now and throughout their lives.”
Today the Member of Parliament read excerpts from books in front of classrooms at Peace Valley and BonHomme Colony Schools. She spoke to students about the importance of reading at home with their parents, grandparents and siblings.
“Parents are among the most important literacy teachers. I encourage families to read together and engage their children with reading for fun,” Hoeppner stated. “This year’s theme is Reading for the Love of It. Promoting a love of reading is critical - unless reading is a pleasurable experience for children and adults, they will stop reading and choose to do other things.”
Hoeppner cited a report released last week indicating that reading proficiency in high school is the greatest predictor of a child's future educational success. Students with high reading skills were found to be 20 times more likely to be in university than their peers with poor reading skills.
Throughout the month of February, Hoeppner is visiting schools to read to classes and answer students’ questions about Parliament, government, and her role as MP. |
