GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN ALTONA’S RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
01/11/2010

Altona, Manitoba – The Town of Altona is moving forward with playground upgrades thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Today, Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and Melvin Klassen, Mayor of Altona, announced federal funding for the Town of Altona to replace existing playground equipment and perform playground landscaping.

“Our Government is supporting the residents of Altona by providing playground equipment for children to enjoy,” said MP Hoeppner. “This investment in Altona’s playground project will create jobs, encourage kids to play outdoors and develop active lifestyles, and ensure that families have access to the essential recreational infrastructure we need today and in the future.”

Federal funding of $62,666 is provided through the RInC program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Town of Altona is providing $125,334. The Altona Community Foundation is contributing $3,000, and $18,000 is being provided through donations and fundraising.

"The Town of Altona and the local playground committee are very grateful for this funding,” said Mayor Klassen. “The playground has been a key activity centre Altona’s Centennial Park for many years. The planned improvements will make it an even more exciting and safer experience for kids of many ages and this funding goes a long way to making this dream a reality.”

The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $153 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.
