MORDEN, MB – Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament, put to rest suggestions that her Private Member’s Bill to end the long-gun registry would be affected by the Government’s action to prorogue Parliament until March 3rd.
“Some reports were emerging that my bill to repeal the long-gun registry might die on the order paper,” Hoeppner said. “This is completely false; my bill is unaffected by prorogation and the launch of a new session of Parliament.”
Unlike items of government business, items of Private Members’ Business continue from session to session; they are automatically reinstated at the stage they had completed at the time of prorogation. This means that the List for the Consideration of Private Members’ Business and the Order of Precedence continue from session to session as well.
“Bill C-391 is a priority for me and for the Conservative Government,” continued Hoeppner. “The bill passed Second Reading in the House of Commons and I will continue to defend and advance the legislation in committee where it is currently being studied.”
“The registry has not targeted criminals as the Liberals promised it would. Instead it continues to harass law-abiding farmers, hunters and sport shooters, and it’s time for this boondoggle to end,” Hoeppner concluded. |
