GOVERNMENT OF CANADA INVESTS IN REC CENTRES IN PORTAGE-LISGAR
12/18/2009

Rec Centres Make Important Contribution to Community Life, says MP Hoeppner

Morden, Manitoba – Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage—Lisgar welcomed new federal funding for two recreation centres in Portage—Lisgar.  Funding for these investments is being provided under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program.

The awards are for the Swan Lake Recreation Complex and the Brunkild Memorial Recreation Centre.

“Local arenas make an important contribution to community life.  In smaller centres like Brunkild and Swan Lake, these facilities are the hub of the community, providing a place for families, friends and neighbours to come together, interact socially and participate in physical activity,” said MP Hoeppner.

The Government of Canada is investing $61,985 in the Swan Lake project to renovate the ice area.  The RM of Lorne will cover the remainder of project costs.  In Brunkild, the federal government will invest $28,938 to install a new geothermal heating system to replace the existing furnace.  The RM of Macdonald is also contributing to this project.

“This investment creates jobs in the short-term for the renovation and construction work, it encourages greater participation in physical activity, and it helps to ensure that residents in these communities have long-term access to essential recreation infrastructure,” Hoeppner continued.”

The RInC program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada, providing a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities. A total of almost $163 million in RInC funding will be invested across the four western provinces.  In Manitoba, Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative.
